Aviation museum's pioneering spirit lives on long after death of founder

We stopped by the NC Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame for the first time. Are either of my daughters particularly interested in aviation? No, but as a family, we like new experiences and learning about various things.

The creation of the museum is rooted in the interests and dreams of Jim Peddycord. In 1996, he created the "Foundation for Aircraft Conservation" and held its first annual air show.

On June 4, 1997, during practice for the second annual show, Jim Peddycord and his son (Rick) collided in mid-air.

Despite the tragic loss, members of the foundation revived Jim Peddycord's dream by continuing to restore vintage war aircrafts. From then until now, the museum serves as a public learning space for military history and aviation.

What you need to know before visiting NC Aviation Museum?

We spent around 45 minutes to an hour in the museum. If we'd read more of the available information, we would've stayed much longer. There's a plethora to see. The museum is open to all ages but if you're visiting with kids, I've added a few personal tips below.

The NC Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame is located at 2222 Pilots View Road in Asheboro, NC. Currently it is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

Ticket prices are $5 for students ages 7 to 17, $10 for adults and $8 for members of the military and senior citizens. Children ages 6 and under are admitted for free.

You enter the museum through the gift shop. There are model planes, teddy bears, water bottles, t-shirts, pencils, etc., for sale. The shop has one of the largest aircraft model collections in the Southeast.

Restrooms and a water fountain are also located in this area.

There are two hangars filled with planes, engines, jeeps, military uniforms and the like. The majority of the aircraft and equipment can't be touched, however, there is one you're allowed to touch and sit inside of.

Running isn't allowed within the hangars. Kids will be tempted to because of the large open space.

Hangar 1 has a corner sitting area where you can watch an educational film. This is a good place to take a break if need be. To get to Hangar 2, you must walk outside briefly.

The museum is located near the Asheboro Regional Airport. We didn't see any planes in use but there were a few parked in a large adjacent area.

If you or your children enjoy visiting transportation-related museums, you might want to check out the N.C. Transportation Museum as well. And the National Railroad Museum and Hall Of Fame.
