5 On Your Side: Wash gym clothes right away

When you get a good workout, your gym clothes can pay the price.

They can get a little ripe and stay that way even after washing.

It starts with the need for special attention.

Fibers in stretchy moisture-wicking fabrics hold in the stink.

"Sweat evaporates, but what’s left behind are odor-causing chemicals on the surface of the synthetic fibers,” said Haniya Rae, Consumer Reports' home editor. “They can be difficult to wash out, and they can build up over time.”

Experts recommend first, try to wash your gym clothes as soon as you finish working out. Letting them sit around promotes bacteria growth, which adds to the odor.

Turning the clothes inside out before you throw them in the washer is a big help.

“This allows the water and detergent to focus on the soils that have accumulated on the inside of your clothes,” Rae said.

Choosing a cold and gentle cycle prevents fading and preserves the fit of synthetic fibers.

If your washer has an extra rinse cycle, use it.

The other point of attack is detergent.

“The chemicals in sweat and body oil are especially difficult to remove and can actually attract other soils that increase odors,” Rae said.

Consumer Reports' tests found Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release is excellent at removing body oil. Just don't use too much of it, as it can cause residue that remains in your clothes and can trap odors.

Consumer Reports also advises against using fabric softener. It can clog the fabric’s pores, inhibiting its wicking abilities.

Don't wash them with jeans, which can be abrasive.

As for drying, Consumer Reports recommends air-drying synthetics, and laying them flat to protect the shape and fit.

So, go ahead and get your sweat on, then get your wash on to keep your gear looking and smelling good.
