Caught on cam: SUV burns outside Cary church

First responders on Monday found an SUV burning outside a Cary church.

Before 1:30 p.m., Apex police officers and Cary firefighters responded to the burning SUV near Green Level Baptist Church at 8509 Green Level Church Road.

Police said the situation started near NC Highway 55 in Apex when officers had an interaction with a woman whom displayed signs of intoxication.

The woman got into a vehicle and began to the leave the scene, driving in a reckless manner. Officers used stop sticks to puncture the vehicle’s tires, but the intoxicated driver still fled the scene initiating a pursuit.

Police said they don’t know if the driver just stopped or the vehicle broke down but the pursuit ended at the Green Level Baptist Church, where the driver was taken into custody.

It is unclear if the chase caused the vehicle to catch on fire.

WRAL crews at the scene saw the driver being put into an ambulance. Police later said the woman was taken to the hospital due to her "apparent level of intoxication." The SUV was completely scorched.

The Cary Fire Department and Apex Police Department were both on scene.
