Four crashes. Two police chases. One driver. Police arrest suspect accused of injuring officer
Durham police arrested a suspect accused of injuring an officer, stealing a pickup truck and leading police on two high-speed chases that resulted in four crashes.
One of the Wednesday crashes injured a Durham police officer.
Raleigh police and the Wake County deputies arrested Janavis Perry, 31, around 1 a.m. Thursday in Raleigh's Brier Creek area.
Perry is charged with:
- Assault on a law enforcement officer
- Breaking or entering a motor vehicle
- Attempted larceny
- Three counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle
- Three counts of selling Sell cocaine
- Three counts of delivering cocaine
- Three counts of possession on a controlled substance (cocaine) with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver
- Fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle
- Two counts of hit and run
- Failing to stop at scene where there was property damage
Authorities took Perry to the Wake County Jail. He received a $437,000 bond.
The chases began Wednesday evening near North Carolina Central University on East Pettigrew Street and Briggs Avenue in Durham.
Around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Durham police attempted to stop a vehicle driven by a man with active warrants.
As the man attempted to get away, he struck an unmarked police vehicle causing the door of the patrol car to strike the officer’s leg. EMS responded and treated the officer on the scene for a minor injury.
Police pursued the vehicle but ended the chase.
A short time later, police received a call that the suspect had crashed on Briggs Avenue near Person Street and was trying to carjack a pickup truck.
He stole the truck and refused to stop for officers.
The suspect crashed a third time on Briggs Road at Riddle Road then crashed a fourth time on Fayetteville Road at N.C. Highway 54 near Southpoint Mall.
The chase ended, but police are still searching for the suspect.
Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the suspect wanted for larceny of a motor vehicle and breaking and entering into a motor vehicle.
The suspect was involved in a total of four crashes at the following locations:
- Striking police vehicle initially near North Carolina Central University on East Pettigrew Street and Briggs Avenuein Durham
- Hit-and-run South Briggs Avenue at Person Street
- Hit-and-run South Briggs Avenue at Riddle Road
- Hit-and-run Fayetteville Road at N.C. 54
The officer who was injured is ok.
No other injuries or weapons were reported in connection with the incidents.
