Supporters of North Carolina's Good Samaritan Law are rallying in Durham Wednesday to urge the N.C. State Legislature to expand the state law.

Families, harm reduction advocates, students, former law enforcement and overdose survivors will hold a rally at CCB Plaza, calling on the North Carolina State Legislature to expand the state’s existing Good Samaritan Law.

They are also asking state officials to include additional provisions to the Good Samaritan Law.

The changes they're advocating for include:

  1. Expanding immunity for drug possession broadly, without confusing carve-outs for certain substances and amounts -- including immunity for those who possess fentanyl.
  2. Expanding immunity for all of those who provide aid to the individual experiencing the overdose
  3. Providing protection from arrest and charge, in addition to prosecution
  4. Ensuring those who call for help in good faith during an overdose emergency aren’t charged with Death by Distribution.
  5. Expanding immunity to students in college who call campus security for an individual experiencing an overdose

Some of the supporters who will be speaking at the event include:

  • Lee Storrow – Community Education Group
  • Chandler Picot - Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor
  • Mary O'Donnell - Member of the #ExpandGoodSamNC Coalition
  • Capt. Lars Paul - Former Fayetteville Police Captain
  • Randy Abbott - National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse
  • Jeremy Sharp - Students for Sensible Drug Policy

The rally will take place Wednesday at 5 p.m. at CCB Plaza, which is located at 201 Corcoran Street in Durham.
