Summer Treats: Maple View Farm ice cream

Idyllic is the word that comes to mind when I describe a visit to get ice cream at Maple View Farm in Hillsborough.

I'm launching a little summer series that I'm calling Summer Treats today. My kids and I will be going out and about to explore some of the best treats the Triangle has to offer. I'll be writing quick posts about our visits.

Yes ... this may make me the best mom ever. But no ... they don't know about it yet. I'm trying to prevent hourly questions about when our next "summer treat" is.

While the focus here will be on sweet, sugary treats (like ice cream today), I'll have some posts about more healthful snacks too. It's hard to beat a sweet, juicy North Carolina peach on a hot summer afternoon.

Our first stop ... Maple View Farm and its delicious ice cream in Hillsborough.

We stopped here on our way back from the mountains several weeks ago. It's a bit of a drive from some points in the Triangle ... probably about an hour from most points in Raleigh. But it's worth the drive.

I had Maple View ice cream before at local shops and at its former spot in Carrboro. Idyllic is the word that comes to mind when I describe the farm.

Here you can enjoy a cone of delicious, creamy ice cream as you sit on the lawn or a picnic table or on the rocking chairs on the porch, enjoying the view of the farm fields and cows below. Kids and parents threw balls and Frisbees. College students lounged in the grass. Bikers pulled up to cool off.

Maple View's ice cream is hormone and antibiotic free. You'll find about 20 different flavors each day. They hold special events from time to time. Check the website and Facebook page for details.

I'll feature another Summer Treat next week. If you have a favorite, please share in the comments below!
