Skin can appear dull all year long, but the effects of a summer full of fun can make it worse. Too much time in the sun can contribute to the appearance of dehydrated skin and impact your skin’s overall health. Coupled with harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, summer weather can do a number on your skin.

Dr. Mark McKenna, Chief Medical Officer and Founder of OVME Aesthetics, says the top reasons your skin may appear dull due to summer activities can be due to:

  • Dehydration from lack of water intake during warm weather and increased activity
  • Absence of moisture in your skin due to heat and UV rays
  • A buildup of dead skin cells
  • Wind and sun damage
  • Clogged pores from sweat, environmental pollution, sunscreens, and oils

Dr. McKenna offered these tips for how to correct skin dullness from sun damage, along with the best treatments and products to correct this, or any other summer skin damage.

  • Hydrafacial – Known for its three-step process, hydrafacials work to deep-clean, exfoliate, and hydrate your skin, and can help treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, dryness, and wrinkles to improve overall skin texture, tone, and appearance
  • Chemical peel – Used to remove damaged skin cells, revealing healthier, smoother skin underneath. There are different types of peels: light, medium, and deep – and this can be a great option to treat wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation
  • Laser Resurfacing – Targets the outer layer of your skin while simultaneously heating the lower layers in the dermis to promote collagen production and improve skin texture and appearance. It is great for anyone who has skin concerns related to age, sun, or acne.
  • Photo Facial – Similar to laser resurfacing, this treatment stimulates the production of collagen. It uses light energy to gently heat the upper layers of your skin, stimulating your cells to regenerate while also penetrating deep into the skin to boost your body’s natural ability to fight the appearance of aging. It is great to improve the effects of sun damage, rosacea, fine lines, large pores and more.
  • Microneedling – This minimally invasive cosmetic procedure uses pinpricks to cause slight injury to the skin so that it responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This treatment is great for anyone looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks, and can also be used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun spots.
