Weekend brings first 90-degree days of year

Summer temperatures are here, and they're hot.

After a scalding Saturday, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said Sunday and Monday could be even hotter.

"Mother's Day is going to be toasty," Maze said. "It's going to be like this for a while. We're also going to have a hot start to the work week."

Sunday and Monday could reach highs of 93 in the afternoon.

From 1981 until 2010, the average first 90-degree day has come on May 15, and the earliest it showed up was March 12 in 1990.

The latest appearance happened in 1983 when the first 90-degree day was on June 27.

Tuesday brings a bit cooler temperatures with highs in the mid-80s. But with lower temperatures also comes rain.

"We start to see an increase in a chance for showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday and some more rain will come Wednesday," Maze said.
