Two students set off a firework Wednesday in a bathroom stall at Clayton High School, according to the town.
A spokesperson for the town said Amiere Dayvon Coates, 18, of Clayton, was charged with felony burning of a school building, felony malicious use of an explosive/incendiary device causing property damage, felony burning or cause to burn certain public buildings and misdemeanor disorderly conduct at school.
He was jailed under a $125,000 bond.
A juvenile petition is being obtained for the other student, who was 16.
According to the town of Clayton, the firework was set off around 2:15 p.m., dismissal time, in the bathroom in the upstairs hall of the 600 building at Clayton High School. The sound of the firework initially caused some students to think it was a gunshot.
Heavy smoke filled the hallway, and a wall was damaged.
Firefighters responded quickly to the school and law enforcement located the students.
