Strangers' super-human efforts save woman's life

The day before Thanksgiving, Nancy Smith, a Wake County School bus driver for 26 years, noticed a car accident on the side of New Bern Avenue. She turned around and went back to investigate, finding a woman trapped beneath the car.

“And the person was motioning for me to come to them,” Nancy Smith said. “I just flagged some people down, help me, just help me.”

Sherry Taylor was one fo the first people who Smith flagged down.

“I saw the bus driver in the street waving her hands trying to get anyone's attention,” Taylor said.

Taylor called 911 while she and others lifted the car off the driver.

"It wasn't a question of if we should do it, it was just how quickly can we help this woman," Taylor said.

“They all banded together and they pushed that car off the person. And one of them pulled the person out from under the car,” Smith said.

Kayla Smith, the woman who was trapped under the car, survived, but she is in serious condition at WakeMed. Her family and friends have set up a Go Fund Me page to help with her recovery.

I just feel like I did the right thing as a human being because we are supposed to help people,” Nancy Smith said. “I'm praying for this person every day,”

Both women refused to be called heroes.

"I really saw the genuine good in people because no one backed down. Everyone tried their hardest to help this individual nobody knew," Taylor said.
