Storms possible Sunday evening, brief cool down coming

A chance for rain and storms Sunday evening will bring cooler air to central North Carolina for the first part of the new work week.

According to WRAL meteorologist Peta Sheerwood, a cold front will move into the area later this afternoon, bringing the Triangle a chance for rain and storms.

Some areas north of Wake County, including Orange and Durham counties, are under a level 1, or low, threat for severe weather Sunday afternoon.

Raleigh could see a few thunderstorms as early as 2 or 3 p.m., Sheerwood said, but those should not be severe in nature.

According to Sheerwood, the first half of Sunday should stay dry.

"The majority of rain we see during the day will be to the south and east of the Triangle," Sheerwood said. "Sunday will not be a washout."

The Triangle will remain relatively dry before 2 p.m.

After 2 p.m., it will be a good idea to keep an eye on the weather, even in Raleigh. Although Sunday will be hot, with highs in the upper 80s, dew points will be relatively low, in the 60s, so it won't feel too muggy.

Sheerwood said Monday and Tuesday will be much milder than the weekend, even calling them "refreshing." Highs on Monday and Tuesday will be in the low 80s, with even lower dew points.

Warmer weather and rain will move in again Wednesday, and temperatures will be in the upper 80s again by the weekend.
