Friday PM weather update: Storms forming around the Triangle

Isolated storms were popping up around the Triangle, bringing torrential downpours, lightning and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Wake and Durham, but allowed them to expire around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Both counties remain, however, under a flood advisory that extends until 6:15 p.m.

"We're under the threat of heavy rain that could lead to flooding," Cambell said, adding that a flood advisory has been issued for Durham and Wake until 6:15 p.m.

A stalled front over eastern North Carolina is responsible for the stormy weather with energy from the heating of the day.

That front will also help strong storms develop Friday afternoon and evening along and east of Interstate 95.

There’s a 20 percent chance for rain on Saturday and a 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday, which means storms will be particularly scattered.

“When these storms get cranked up, they’re doing a lot of damage,” Gardner said.

Storms on Thursday night blew off roofs and took down trees in Benson.

Those going to the North Carolina coast for the weekend should expect rain, Gardner said.

High temperatures will stay around 90 degrees next week, and the high humidity levels will stick around, too.
