We're wrapping up this week's series on local gardens with the colorful blooms at Duke Gardens in Durham.

More than 300,000 people visit the gardens on the campus of Duke University each year, according to its website. As a family, we have really enjoyed traipsing across its 55 acres. You'll see everything from formal gardens to natural areas to a discovery garden with organic fruits and vegetables.

And don't forget artist Patrick Doughtery's giant stick-built structure called The Big Easy, which is found on Duke Garden's open meadow known as the South Lawn. Doughtery recently was at Duke Gardens to give the piece a bit of reinforcement. Kids love playing in and around it.

But, of course, at Duke Gardens, nature is the focus. They recently shared these photos on their Facebook page of what's been in bloom in recent weeks.

See breathtaking blooms like these for yourself with a visit to Duke Gardens. The grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk. It's free to visit, though there is a small fee to park there. It's at 420 Anderson St., Durham.
