Soldier dies in traffic accident at Fort Bragg

A 24-year-old military mechanic died Wednesday at Fort Bragg during a traffic accident at Fort Bragg, officials announced Friday.

Sgt. Joseph Zygarowski, who was assigned to 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, in Virginia, died in a traffic accident, according to Maj. Matt Visser, spokesman for the 18th Airborne. Visser said Army Accident Investigations is reviewing the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Joseph Zygarowski,” shared Col. Samuel Miller, commander of the 7th Transportation Brigade. “He was an exceptional soldier as part of our Resolute Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this tragic time.”

Zygarowski enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2018 and trained in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Fort Lee, Virginia, before moving to his current assignment at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

“Sgt. Zygarowski was a model soldier, non-commissioned officer, and leader. His presence and expertise will be deeply missed by everyone in the team,” shared Capt. Jonah Crews, commander of 149th Seaport Operations Company.

Zygarowski had received numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with an oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Ribbon, and the Army Service Ribbon.

He will posthumously be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
