At Tucker’s request, we visited the thirteen pair of boots memorial near the @camp_lejeune gate.

Tucker, a 6-year-old boy from Sneads Ferry, visited a Camp Lejeune memorial to the 13 U.S. soldiers killed in Kabul last week.

Outside the gate sits 13 boots, one representing each service member who died while working to evacuate American allies from Afghanistan.

Tucker enjoys writing to veterans as a hobby, asking them to write back as a way to show respect. Since Tucker lives so close to the base, he wanted to find a way to pay his respects.

Sgt. Nicole Gee, who was assigned to the Combat Logistics Battalion 24, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force, in Camp Lejeune, died at 23. She was from Sacramento, Calif.

A post from her Instagram page features a photo of her holding a baby in Kabul. "I love my job," she wrote, days before she died.

Tucker left an American flag patch at the boots of Gee.
