Small plane crash on Lake Gaston

Halifax County emergency communications officials said that a small plane crashed on Lake Gaston, west of Roanoke Rapids, injuring a woman Sunday morning.

Park rangers said that a husband and wife took off in an Ultra-Lite plane from the Halifax County Airport and were attempting to practice a legal water landing on Lake Gaston shortly before 10 a.m.

The plane's landing gear came out and hit the water, causing the plane to flip over and crash into the lake near Goat Island and Osprey Point.

Rangers said the woman suffered some bumps and bruises and was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center as a precaution. Her husband, who was piloting the plane, was OK.

The plane was upside down and completely submerged after the crash, rangers said. Crews tied the plane to some buoys to keep it from sinking, and the pilot was helping them try to pull it out of the water.

The husband and wife, whose names haven't been released, were from the town of Halifax.
