Skateboarders Take on City Over Self-Made Shrine

The Blount Street Skate Shop in Fayetteville has lost a battle with the city over an unconventional sign.

After old, broken skateboards collected outside the store, Dorian Motowylak began hanging them in a nearby tree. The "shrine" included more than 200 pieces by February, and some called it an eyesore.

"If you break a board, you've earned the right to hang it on the trees," Motowylak said. "To me, it's just beautiful, and the kids love it."

The city called the boards a "snipe sign," or an illegal posting meant to bring in business.
