Shooting near NCCU sours homecoming weekend

Destiny Streeter was walking near the 2200 block of Fayetteville Street Saturday night when she stopped, then turned around.

"I saw people running so I started easing up," she said.

Streeter returned to her dorm room at North Carolina Central University. Minutes later, she received a campus e-mail stating that an active shooter was on campus.

One person was shot at a home at 2210 Fayetteville St. at about midnight.

The home is across the street from the school and yards away from Baynes Hall – where Streeter lives.

Jada McFarlane, a NCCU freshman, found out about the shooting after receiving a call from her mother, who also receives school e-mail notifications.

"It is really kind of close," she said. "My dorm is right over there so I hope that it becomes a whole lot safer than it is now."

The shooting victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim's name was not released. No arrests have been made as of Sunday night.

Although the shooting was not on campus, NCCU police sent the alert as a precaution, officials said. Students were asked to seek shelter and lock their doors. The lock down was lifted at 1:09 a.m. Sunday.

McFarlane said the shooting soured her first homecoming weekend. 

"It's like a let down because it's supposed to be fun," she said.
