Wake sheriff says man considered armed and dangerous in north Raleigh after 4-day manhunt

Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker is asking for the community to be on the look-out for 24-year-old Raequan Mudd who was last spotted in north Raleigh after running away from police. Officials said Mudd was bitter after a breakup with his girlfriend and retaliated against her.

Mudd is considered armed and dangerous and the north Raleigh community should stay on the look out for him, Baker said.

Mudd went on a crime spree on Thursday and started a fire inside a home he was renting in order to get back at his girlfriend who broke up with him, according to the sheriff. He was also upset because he was served an eviction notice that same day.

After setting fire to the home, he fired shots into his girlfriend's parents' house on Silver Star Drive. Mudd is facing charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling and arson, authorities said.

On Friday morning, officers found Mudd and tried to pull him over. He sped off and crashed his SUV at the intersection of Honeycutt and Durant roads and then fled on foot, authorities said. The SUV burst into flames after the crash.

Officials continued to look for Mudd over the weekend and followed tips of possible sightings. Sometime over the weekend, a resident of the Bent Tree neighborhood provided police with Ring doorbell footage that appeared to show Mudd in the area of north Raleigh without shoes on.

"We're going to find him," Baker said. "We're not going to stop until we do."

Baker said that Mudd was known to cause harm to his ex-girlfriend and was "trouble."

"We're here to try and keep that from happening," Baker said.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office confirmed late Monday that nine months ago Mudd stabbed his now ex-girlfriend, and then himself, before he was tased by a Johnston County Sheriff's Deputy.

Mudd's punishment was a 50-yard restraining order and six months of required medication and mental health counseling.

As of Monday at 2 p.m., Baker said authorities had not located Mudd but believe he is still near Honeycutt and Durant roads.

"There's no question that anyone who's not a resident in that area is going to stick out like a sore thumb," he said. "At some point, he's going to have to come up for air."

The sheriff's office used drones, helicopters and K-9s but was still not able to find Mudd. When questioned about why the sheriff's office has not been able to find Mudd, officials said he has been "moving around" the area too much.

Authorities said that no one was injured during Mudd's crime spree.

Baker said he is depending on tips from the public to help find Mudd. Anyone who may have seen Mudd is asked to call 911 or the Wake County Sheriff’s Office at 919-856-6911.
