A pizza delivery driver was fatally shot in a robbery, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said James Anthony Lee Jr., 21, of Weldon, was found dead with at least one gunshot wound in Roanoke Rapids around 1 a.m.

Lee was delivering pizza and hadn’t checked in with his employer, authorities said.

His employer found him dead and contacted the sheriff’s office, authorities said.

James Lee's father said he feels like something more could have been done.

"I don't know how long it took them to check on him or to find out how long he was missing. They should call the driver at least after the first order is delivered," James Lee Sr. said.

Sheriff Wes Tripp said that a similar incident occurred in the same area about two months ago but that this one "escalated."

"It's a terrible situation," Tripp said. "Our society has gotten into a terrible situation."

Tripp said Lee had no money and no pizza. Authorities believe he is the fourth pizza delivery driver to be robbed in the area.

"We are heartbroken to hear the news about this driver and our thoughts are with Mr. Lee’s family and friends at this time. Our local franchisee and the store team are working closely with the authorities on this very active investigation. This location is closed today in light of this tragic loss," said a spokesperson for Domino's.

Anyone with information can call the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 252-583-8201 or Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444. A reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest.
