Shark bites boy in Oak Island

A 9-year-old was bitten by a shark Wednesday afternoon while swimming in the ocean in Oak Island.

On Wednesday at 3 p.m., the Oak Island Police Department was notified of a shark bite near the SE 46th Street beach access location.

While swimming in shallow water, the shark bit the child on the shoulder.

One of the child's family members said they noticed a "small fish jumping out of the water nearby."

Shortly afterwards, the 9-year-old was bitten in the front shoulder from either a young or small species of shark.

The family was able to drive the child to Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. The 9-year-old was treated and released.

According to photos provided by the family, bite marks and a small wound were visible, but no major injuries were sustained.

Although the reason for the bite is unclear, this appears to be an isolated incident.

The Beach Services Unit is maintaining close observation of the surf area during their patrols.
