Search underway for missing Virginia man

While most families were celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday, one family is desperate to find their missing dad.

Crews were searching in Warren County for Charles Burton, who is from Portsmouth, Va. but disappeared Friday while checking on a property his family owns near Fate Weaver Road.

On Sunday afternoon, several volunteer fire departments set out to continue the search for Burton and a command center had been set up near the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Station.

“Our pastor told us about it in church. We just wanted to see if we could come out and help look for him,” one volunteer said.

Agencies across Virginia and North Carolina headed into the woods, a lake and nearby fields in the search for Burton. Crews met multiple times on Sunday to stage and strategize and make sure they covered all teh ground where the 67-year-old may be.

Burton’s children said they are waiting with other family and friends and hoping for the best.

"I just think they'd be heartbroken wondering where their dad is," one neighbor said.

Burton stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weight around 180 pounds. He has grey hair and blue eyes, and it is unknown what he was wearing at the time of his disappearance.

Authorities said the search for Burton will continue at 8 a.m. Monday.

While people are offering their time to search for Burton, emergency officials are asking people not to search on their own. Officials are relying on expert groups to locate Burton, but those looking to help can donate supplies, including Gatorade and water, to the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department.
