School lunch costs in Wake County could increase next year
The price of school lunches for children in Wake County could increase for the upcoming school year.
On Monday, school leaders will vote on whether lunch prices will increase by 20 cents for the 2019-20 year.
The change would raise lunch prices to $2.75 for elementary school students and $3 for middle and high school students. If approved, the change would be the fourth straight year of lunch price hikes, and the new cost would translate to a 75-cent difference compared to the 2015-2016 year.
One family told WRAL News the increase seems small, but it still adds up.
"They may not see it now -- but later down the road, it's going to impact them, because those small cents, they add up," said Anthony Lee of Raleigh. "Every little cent counts."
The changes would only apply to students who purchase full price lunches. Students who receive free or reduced price meals won't see changes.
School leaders say the extra money is to fund the child nutrition services program. The vote will take place at 5:30 p.m. during a school board meeting in Cary.
