Charges against a Sanford man have been upgraded after his neighbor died from wounds suffered in a shooting last month, police said.

Billy Craig Carter, 47, was shot outside Mark Christopher Patterson's home on Family Farm Lane on June 19. He died at UNC Hospitals late Thursday, police said.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two neighbors.

Patterson, 46, was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He now faces a charge of first-degree murder.

He was being held Friday without bond in the Lee County jail.
