Roof, porch of Fayetteville woman's home damaged during Wednesday's storms
When storms moved through central North Carolina on Wednesday, Cumberland County saw some of the strongest winds.
One Fayetteville woman was on the brunt of those strong winds.
During Wednesday's storms, Cheryl Bass had her porch blown off at her Matt Hair Road home and sustained roof damage.
"It was strong enough that it just pushed those poles over and it just snapped them off down over here and I'm like, 'That was pretty bad,'" Bass said.
For Bass, it reminded her of another storm that rolled through.
"It reminded me of the tornado that we had come through several years back," Bass said. "I was really shocked to see it was this bad."
Bass first was alerted to potential damage when her security system informed her the alarm went off. Bass couldn't go to immediately to see the damage so she asked her sister to check on her home.
"My alarm was going off and I didn't know why," Bass said. "So, I called her to see if she could come by."
When Bass' sister arrived at the house, she told her to get down to the house.
"She told me a storm had come through," Bass said. "She came down and checked it out and told me it was pretty bad."
Bass' also lost water to her house during the storm. She said she's lived in Fayetteville her entire life, and said she's never experienced wind damage like Wednesday.
Fayetteville seemed to receive the worst of the storm system.
Before 1 p.m., Fayetteville Regional Airport recorded a 62-mph wind gust, and a woman who lives in the Gray's Creek neighborhood said her grandchild's trampoline flew across her yard, crashing into an oak tree.
Fortunately, the damage to the rest of the house was relatively small, despite how it appeared.
"Everything looks good except for the front bedroom where the roof landed," Bass said. "I have some insulation, but not very much."
