A woman from Rocky Mount is receiving recognition for her dedication to feeding the community.

Candace Herring, who was once homeless herself, has established her food ministry in Rocky Mount to assist those struggling with hunger.

Operating from Saint Mark Church on Tarboro Street, Herring runs her ministry called the Manna Oasis Blessing Box. Herring says there are no requirements such as referrals to receive assistance.

"Here, you don't need referrals. You don't need to sign anything," Herring said. "All you need to do is just pull up."

Herring and her children experienced homelessness in Wake County before getting back on their feet and relocating to Rocky Mount last year.

After witnessing the hunger issues in the community, she started by donating food to another church's outdoor pantry before establishing the Manna Oasis at Saint Mark.

"Very much hunger is a big thing here," Herring said. "A lot of people are always looking for food."

Every week, Herring distributes approximately 200 loaves of bread, targeting families who might not have access to other forms of aid, especially parents who work late hours.

"It's easy access for parents who are not off of work. some parents don't get off of work until after hours, and community pantries are usually closed by then." Herring said.

Although the Manna Oasis operates as a wooden box, Herring envisions expanding it into a full-service kitchen where anyone in need can enjoy a hot meal. She believes in providing a dignified dining experience, emphasizing that everyone is worthy of sitting in a pleasant atmosphere and enjoying a meal prepared with love and care.

"A lot of people, they don't think that they're worthy anymore. You can sit down in a nice place, under God, and enjoy your meal that was cooked with love," Herring said.

Saint Mark Church is working to partner with a food bank and will need more donations to support Candace Herring's Manna Oasis Blessing Box. Herring recently shared a Facebook post about her work, which attracted much attention and praise.

Many people called her work "just what Rocky Mount needs."

"It starts here, with the community, and I really am grateful," Herring said.
