Rocky Mount police downtown unit leads to reduction in crime

A new Rocky Mount Police Department Downtown Unit aims to reduce crime, and data shows it's already paying off.

In the summer of 2023, the police department created the unit to curb crime and connect with community members. The most recent data provided by the department shows that after the unit was put in place, crime downtown dropped by about 12.5%.

Police Officer Matthew Gilliard said the unit has been well-received.

"Overall, the support and feedback we get from the community is really good," Gilliard said.

Officers can access bicycles, ATVs, and Segways as part of their patrols as other ways of interacting with the public.

"The numbers have decreased, and I believe it is because we now have a high visibility presence," Unit Supervisor Sergeant Bobby Connie said.

Connie said he's heard from several business owners that they feel more secure when police are around. Anthony Cunningham, the owner of Kafe Louverture, is one of those people.

"As you are trying to build your downtown, a police presence is important," Cunningham said. "When you see a cop on a scooter or bike, it is slower. They are more visible."

Property crime is one of the police department's most significant areas of focus. According to the 2023 crime report, property crime has increased by 18% since last year.

The hope is these patrols will curb crime downtown and encourage safety throughout the city.

"We have opportunities just by grabbing a cup of coffee to say, 'Hey, make sure you are locking your doors or hiding items that may be expensive.' They are taking that information and giving it to family members; they are actually helping us spread the word," Gilliard said.

Cunningham sees the advancement as another reason for more business owners and visitors to frequent downtown.

"We need more incentives for those who want to open up businesses downtown," he said.
