Authorities canceled a Silver Alert Tuesday afternoon for a Rocky Mount man with a cognitive impairment who was reported missing earlier in the day.

Jose Garcia, 23, was found in Dunn, police said. They did not provide details of his condition or the circumstances by which he was found.

A Silver Alert was issued for Garcia around 5:40 a.m. after his family said he was last seen walking on Winstead Avenue at 6 p.m. Monday.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
