Robbery spree earns Raleigh man 84-year prison sentence
A Raleigh man has been sentenced to more than 84 years in federal prison for a robbery spree two years ago, authorities said Monday.
Daryl Bernard Carter, 41, was convicted of one count each of bank robbery, armed bank robbery and conspiracy to violate the Hobbs Act – a federal law involving disrupting interstate commerce – two counts of Hobbs Act robberies and three counts of possessing a firearm during a crime of violence.
On Jan. 23, 2008, Carter and a juvenile accomplice used a sawed-off shotgun to rob two Raleigh gas stations: a Crown on Wake Forest Road and a BP on Poole Road, authorities said.
On Feb. 1, 2008, Carter assaulted a teller and robbed a Wachovia bank branch in Knightdale. Three weeks later, Carter and a juvenile accomplice robbed a Wachovia branch on Spring Forest Road in Raleigh after assaulting some bank customers, authorities said.
“The court’s sentence may seem harsh at first glance. However, this type of robbery spree demands a stiff sentence," U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement. "In a country where random criminal acts are relatively rare, these crimes target local businesses and average citizens in frightening, and potentially dangerous, ways. We hope sentences like this one handed down by the court will work to deter this type of crime.”
