Rising waters cause flooding at Kerr Lake campsites

Recent heavy rains have raised the level of Kerr Lake, causing flooding that closed approximately 150 campsites for Memorial Day weekend.

Rains have pushed the lake water level from 301.5 feet above sea level to almost 307 feet, canceling plans for many campers.

Ricky Cornelius's camp site was underwater Wednesday.

"They told us at that point all campsites were reserved and there were no other sites available, so we kind of gave up," he said. 

By Friday morning Cornelius said the water cleared.

"Everyone was jumping up and down for joy. This is out first outing each year and the kids were elated and ready to go."

The group, Kerr Lake Park Watch, told WRAL Saturday that the Army Corps of Engineers released some water from the lake, but were concerned about harming striped bass reproduction. 

Cornelius said he was thankful the water did not ruin his trip. 

"We plan on being here as long as we can make it," he said. 

According to Kerr Lake officials, campers with reservation were notified and if other campsites were not found, campers had the option of receiving a refund.
