Crafting community and savory brews: The story of Oak City Brewing Company
Blake Cone and Matt Keeler shared more than just beers; they shared a dream of creating the ideal brewery – a place where families could unwind, dogs could roam freely and patrons could savor delightful craft brews. "We knew we wanted to call it Oak City Brewing Company, so before anything, we reserved the name," Matt said. About three years ago, they took a deep dive into their dream, reserved the Oak City Brewing Company name, URL and never looked back.
The quest for the perfect location
After traversing countless locations, adjusting budgets endlessly and brewing beer in their garages, the duo found the perfect spot in downtown Knightdale, just 25 minutes outside Raleigh. "We did a lot of research on how breweries can revitalize areas," Matt explained. Knightdale, once devastated by a fire, was in the midst of revitalization. The 102-year-old house Matt and Blake acquired became the foundation for the Oak City Brewery we know today.
The name and its connection to nature
The name "Oak City Brewing Company" reflects their love for the outdoors and ties back to Raleigh, known as the "City of Oaks" and the neighboring Knightdale, named a National Arbor Day tree city for 14 years in a row. The brewery boasts a beautiful oak tree against the backdrop of a 76-acre park, inviting patrons to relax beneath its branches with a cold beer in hand, whether they come alone, with family or their four-legged friends.
Taking the plunge and weathering the storm
In the spring of 2015, Blake and Matt took the entrepreneurial plunge, quitting their jobs (both with newborns on the way) and began turning their dream into a reality. "We have to thank our amazing supportive wives for that," Matt said. Oak City Brewing Company finally opened its doors on January 2, 2016.
A community's resilience in the face of adversity
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to the food and drink industry, but it was during this time that the Knightdale community rallied behind Oak City Brewery. Initially met with skepticism that a craft brewery could thrive in the town, Matt recalls, "we really have our customers to thank for surviving Covid." People purchased their canned beers and to-go offerings and a dedicated window for sales emerged. The brewery's community-oriented atmosphere took root, creating a space where everyone felt welcome.
Crafting with care
The brewery reflects the passion and dedication of its founders. Matt and Blake refurbished an oak bar table from Asheville and crafted all the wooden tables by hand, adding a personal touch to the establishment.
A staple in the Knightdale community
With 20 taps, Oak City Brewing Company has become a pillar of the Knightdale community. The brewery hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including yoga on the lawn, pint night and a run club. Even if you're not a local, it's well worth the trip to share a beer with this amazing community in a historic house with great vibes.
Oak City Brewing Company, with its blend of excellent craft brews and a welcoming atmosphere, stands as a testament to the power of dreams, community support and the enduring appeal of enjoying a cold beer in good company. So, the next time you find yourself near Knightdale, be sure to visit Oak City Brewing Company, where a warm welcome and a savory brew is waiting for you.
