ReOpen NC hosts fundraiser for Ace Speedway

The group ReOpenNC, who surfaced during the coronavirus pandemic to oppose Governor Cooper's initial stay-at-home order, is holding another rally and fundraiser on Saturday.

ReOpenNC is held an event for Ace Speedway in Alamance County at a truck stop in Burlington. The speedway was recently ordered by a judge to stop holding races after the state health department and the governor warned it numerous times to stop.

Cooper said at a media briefing that opening the speedway to crowds was a “reckless decision” by the owner.

The state health department said that Ace Speedway's races put North Carolinians at "grave risk" and declared it an "imminent hazard" for spreading coronavirus.

The speedway owner, Robert Turner, openly defied the governor's order prior to going to court. In an interview with WRAL, Turner called the temporary restraining order a "death wish" for his company.

ReOpenNC raised about $1,000 to help with legal costs. The money is going directly to the speedway owners.

A press release from ReOpenNC said law enforcement officials will also be speaking at the event.

Johnson said in a statement he wouldn't cite the local speedway for violating the governor's orders.
