Record-breaking weekend expected for holiday travel

The status of flights was improving Monday at Raleigh-Durham International Airport and across the country.

On Monday at 4 p.m., 17 flights were delayed at RDU and no cancelations were reported.

Across the country, more than 2,000 flights were delayed and 119 flights were canceled on Monday afternoon. The numbers are an improvement from what was seen last week, which worried some travelers ahead of a busy holiday travel weekend.

The 4th of July holiday could be a record-breaking one for travel on the roads and in the air.

This travel nightmare many are reporting is the result of a lot of factors -- weather, staffing shortages at both airlines and air traffic control centers. On top of that, we're seeing a record breaking number of travelers.

The Federal Aviation Administration anticipated Thursday would be the busiest travel day ahead of the 4th of July, estimating more than 52,000 flights.

Travel expert David Fleming offered some advice to those headed to the airport this week.

"The key is to get ahead of it," Fleming said. "When you are noticing a problem or a delay, look online to see what other flights you could switch to."

Fleming said you should try to bring only a carry-on bag.

We could also break records on the roads. AAA said more than 43 million people plan to drive out of town for the holiday weekend.
