If your French toast is not made with challah bread, is it even worth eating?

Every Friday night, my family usher’s in Shabbat by lighting candles, saying a blessing over the wine/grape juice and breaking into a fresh loaf of challah. More often than not, that leaves us with a half a loaf of challah for the rest of the weekend and one of our kids’ favorite ways to polish the loaf off is as French toast.

Where is the best Challah in the Triangle

I reached out to the Triangle’s Jewish Facebook to source the community’s favorite challah finds. This is what they had to say.

From Grocery Stores:

From Specialty Bakeries

*I should note that not all these challah’s may be kosher but they will be delicious and make an excellent plate of French toast.

Recipe: Challah French Toast

Ingredients:

  • Your favorite loaf of challah
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¼ c. milk
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Butter for frying
  1. In a shallow bowl (I usually use a pasta bowl), mix together eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  2. Slice challah and soak thoroughly in egg mixture, flipping it over multiple times so each slice is properly saturated. You may need to add more eggs to your mixture depending on how many slices of challah you have.
  3. Melt butter in a large frying pan and add soaked challah slices.
  4. Fry until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes, and flip. Repeat with remaining challah slices.
  5. Serve with favorite French toast toppings. We like either warm syrup or butter with a cinnamon and sugar mixture.
