Across from the general aviation terminal, the observation deck and small playground, complete with a mini-runway and sand pit, is a favorite of plane enthusiasts and moms of transportation-loving kids.

Some great news for longtime fans of Raleigh-Durham International Airport's Observation Park: It's opening back up!

The park will reopen Monday, Aug. 2, after closing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The park is a popular spot for families and airplane enthusiasts. It provides a view of the airport's 10,000-foot primary runway and is located right next to the air traffic control tower.

You can watch the planes take off and land and listen to the communications between the pilots and tower via audio speakers on the park's observation deck. Kids will love the mini-runways that they can run along and the small play area. When my kids were much younger, we went on a lot of picnics here.

"RDU thanks you for your patience during the closure and looks forward to seeing you again soon," a press release says.

Observation Park is open from 9 a.m. to sunset, daily. Parking is right next to it, and bathrooms are available. You can get to it by following signs for the General Aviation Terminal. Check RDU's website for more details on the location within the airport.
