Raleigh teacher indicted in student sex cases facing indecent liberties charge in Durham

A former Raleigh middle school teacher indicted on charges of multiple sex crimes involving a student is facing even more charges.

Nicholas Conlon Smith, 36, of 7401 Longstreet Drive, was charged Tuesday with indecent liberties with a child in connection with a case in Durham.

According to court papers, the charges stem from an incident that occurred in August 2015.

Smith was indicted by a Wake County grand jury in December on more than two dozen charges from incidents that occurred between 2011 and 2012.

He is accused of raping a student while he was working as a teacher at the Montessori School of Raleigh and is also charged with several counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

A spokesperson for the Montessori School of Raleigh said Smith taught at the Brier Creek campus since 2006. He was suspended indefinitely without pay on Nov. 7 when he left the school's campus with police.

Smith is currently awaiting trial in Wake County. He was given a $250,000 bond for the Durham charges but already was in the Wake County jail under more than $1 million bond.

He has been ordered to have no contact with anyone under age 18.
