Raleigh has more than 380,000 residents, according to the latest population estimates by the city Planning Department’s Growth Management Division.

The estimated population of 380,173 is 5,853 more people than the city's January estimate of 374,320 residents. Estimates are based on the number of dwelling units, the average number of people per household and the dwelling occupancy and vacancy averages.

Since last July, the estimated population has grown by 12,178, according to city figures.

Last month, the U.S. Census Bureau released its annual population estimate for the year ended July 1, 2007. Its estimated population of 375,806 for last year placed Raleigh 48th nationally.

Raleigh moved past Honolulu and Arlington, Texas, on the Census Bureau's population list.
