A Raleigh police officer was injured in a car crash while he was responding to two car crashes on the Interstate 87 South ramp to Interstate 40 East at around 10 p.m. on Friday.

The officer was parked in his patrol car with lights flashing when a work van rear ended him, officials said.

The driver of the van ran away from the scene of the crash, but officials say he was captured by another police officer after a "brief foot pursuit."

Both the officer and the van driver were transported to WakeMed for injuries. The officer's injuries were not life-threatening.

The van driver was charged with driving while impaired and felony fleeing to elude arrest.

The ramp was temporarily closed Saturday night due to the crashes in the area.
