Raleigh police identify 4 killed in wrong-way crash on I-440 West

I-440 West closed for several hours after wrong-way driver causes crash

Four people were killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 440 West in Raleigh.

At 2:21 a.m., the Raleigh Police Department responded to a crash on I-440 westbound near Capital Boulevard.

The crash involved two cars, according to the police.

They confirmed that four people were involved in the incident, with no survivors.

Police said a man was operating a 2013 Honda Civic, with a woman in the front passenger seat and a man in the back passenger seat were traveling the wrong way on I-440 westbound near Capital Boulevard. The driver was identified as Gerson Ivan Ambriz-Martin, 21. The passengers have been identified as Yesenia Gutierrez Lopez, 32, and Matias Lopez Aldair Rivaldo, 24.

The second vehicle, a 2018 Honda Accord, was driven by a woman traveling straight ahead and was struck by the Honda Civic. She has been identified as Bianca Zena Powell, 28.

“440 Westbound and Wake Forest road, be on the lookout for a wrong-way driver on 440 Westbound. Newer model sedan, unknown make and model. Traveling east in the westbound lanes,” a dispatcher said on the Broadcastify radio traffic.

The crash is currently being investigated. I-440 westbound was closed between Brentwood Road and Capital Boulevard for about five hours, but the road is now open.
