Raleigh police arrest 58-year-old man connected to 1998 sexual assault case

The Raleigh Police Department arrested a man on Thursday in connection with a sexual assault case from 1998.

David Lee Toney, 58, is facing the following charges:

• Felony first-degree rape
• Felony attempted first-degree sexual offense
• Felony kidnapping
• Felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury

Evidence in this case was gathered as part of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) launched by the North Carolina Department of Justice.

The investigation and arrest were made possible by a positive match from the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database containing DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence and missing persons.
