Raleigh more than doubles fines for noise
Noisy neighbors and businesses in Raleigh will soon have to pay higher fines. The city council voted Tuesday to raise fines for those in violation of the city's noise ordinance from $100 for a first-time violation to $250.

Noisy neighbors and businesses in Raleigh will soon have to pay higher fines. The city council voted Tuesday to raise fines for those in violation of the city's noise ordinance from $100 for a first-time violation to $250.
The new rate goes into effect Feb. 3.
The request for a change came from people who live in and around the Glenwood South entertainment district who have complained about loud music and nightlife, but it applies city-wide.
Rather than measure noise in decibels, the new ordinance asks only that police determine whether a noise is too loud based on what a reasonable person considers disruptive.
There are different rules based on time of day and what type of noise is being created.
