Raleigh mayor seeks Durham's input on affordable housing plan
Mary-Ann Baldwin, Raleigh's new mayor, will meet with Durham Mayor Steve Schewel on Tuesday to seek his input on Raleigh's affordable housing crisis.
In November, Durham voters overwhelmingly approved the city issuing $95 million in bonds to help create more affordable housing. The affordable housing bond is the largest in the history of North Carolina.
Now, Baldwin is proposing an affordable housing bond for Raleigh, and she wants Schewel's feedback.
"I'm sure she wants to hear how we put it together and what we did," Schewel said.
In Durham, the funds will be used over the next five years to redevelop Durham housing projects, help find permanent housing for people who are homeless, fund down payments for low-income, first-time home buyers and assist people in danger of being evicted.
Baldwin said Durham did an excellent job of enhancing housing choices, and she wants to copy those actions in Raleigh.
