A Raleigh man was shot to death Saturday night outside a convention center next to a well-known barbecue restaurant in Wilson, police said.

Officers responding to a shots fired at at about 10:45 p.m. at the Bill Ellis Convention Center, at 2811 Chicken Drive, found Kelly Wilkerson with several gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Stephen Louis Maddox Jr., 41, of 509 Ember Drive in Durham, was charged with first-degree murder. He was being held without bond in the Wilson County jail.

Both men were attending the 10th anniversary celebration for the Queens of Chrome Motorcycle Club at the convention center, police said.

No other information, including a possible motive in the shooting, was released.
