WRAL's David Crabtree heads to Poland to tell Ukrainian refugees' stories

A church in Raleigh is holding a barbecue fundraiser for relief efforts to help refugees from Ukraine.

All of the money raised by Highland Baptist Church is going to help those affected by the war in Ukraine. At $10 a plate, with a thousand meals to sell, they're hoping to make a difference.

It starts with an assembly line of barbecue, brownies – and kindness.

"It's very awesome to help these people," says Angie Boggs.

Cars lined up for the home-cooked lunch, aspiring to eat well and help those in need.

WRAL News anchor David Crabtree's reporting from Poland illustrated the cost of war – spurring many at home to action.

"i wish we could do more to help with the Ukrainian refugees and the situation there. It's a tragedy what's happening there," says Frank White. "We're just grateful that we have the direct connection with Baptists on Mission in those three counties, particularly Hungary and Poland."

Funds are split in half, with 50% going to Baptists on Mission and 50% going to Samaritan's Purse. All of it will be helping serve Ukrainian refugees.

"You read in the media what's going on over there, and it's tragic. I'm getting emotional. We're supposed to be God's people, and help," says Nancy Barwick.

If you weren't able to make it out for barbecue, the church is collecting donations online.
