Brush fires were reported Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, in Franklinton.

Rain late Tuesday and Wednesday helped knock down many of the remaining brush fires across the state, officials said.

Thirty-nine fires continue to burn across the state, according to the state Division of Forest Resources.

The dry weather and strong winds fanned more than 500 wildfires in North Carolina in the past two weeks, burning more than 10,000 acres. That amount is about half or the state's yearly average, officials said.

Halifax County was among one of the hardest hit areas. Fires there burned about 750 acres since Sunday.
