Rabid bat found in Raleigh neighborhood, two young people being treated
Animal control was called to a Raleigh neighborhood on Thursday in response to a bat acting strangely that had come into contact with two young people. The bat tested positive for rabies, and the two young people are being treated.
On Thursday, a Raleigh Police Department animal control officer responded to a call about a bat that was acting abnormally and had come into contact with two young people.
The bat was collected and transported to a lab, where it tested positive for rabies.
The young people who came into contact with the animal have begun post-exposure treatment.
The bat was reported near the 10000 block of Cokesbury Lane in Raleigh.

Minimize risk of rabies
Wake County health officials provided the following tips to minimize your chances of coming in contact with a rabid animal.
- Do not approach animals you don't know.
- Ensure your pets have a current rabies vaccination.
- Outdoor pets should be kept inside until they receive booster vaccines.
- Do not feed stray or unknown animals, including cats and dogs.
- Do not leave trash or food outside, except in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
- Do not leave pet food outside overnight.
- If a pet comes in contact with an animal who might be rabid, contact a vet immediately.
