The state’s health agency confirmed a rabid bat was found in Marlboro County.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said the bat was found on the road near Ebenezer and Mays Road in Bennettsville this week.

The bat was submitted on Wednesday and was confirmed to have rabies on Thursday.

The agency added that two people were exposed and have been referred to a healthcare provider. Two dogs were also exposed and have been quarantined as per the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.

“Rabid bats have been known to transmit the rabies virus,” said Terri McCollister, Rabies Program Team Leader.
