Moving to a new home already comes with a set of challenges — moving your business or company adds even more. Not only are there specific rules around commercial real estate moving, but oftentimes, you'll need special equipment to haul and store your items, all on an expedited timeline.

At Raleigh moving company Miracle Movers, owner Larry Hinnant has experience handling both residential and commercial moves.

"Insurance is much higher for commercial moves, and most companies don't even qualify. You also often need permits to move everything legally," said Hinnant. "Still, the biggest difference is having the men and the equipment to handle it. It's lots of moving that needs to be done quickly, and you need a company that not only has the staff to do that, but has the ability to do it fast."

Miracle Movers recently acquired a warehouse, trucks and equipment from another local moving company that went out of business. This is the third moving company they've acquired in the past few months. In doing so, they now offer a 40,000-square-foot, climate-controlled warehouse, eight loading docks and a team of over 60 experienced movers.

When choosing what moving company to work with during a commercial relocation, Hinnant recommends keeping a few things in mind.

"It's important to meet with your commercial moving team and interview each other to make sure it's a strong fit. Reading reviews on Google can also help you find out if they're a trustworthy business," said Hinnant. "Ask questions like if they're equipped to handle a full load, if they have the appropriate insurance, if they have a secure warehouse. If they do have a warehouse, ask to tour it in order to see if you're comfortable keeping your things there."

Not all moving companies are able to offer a secure warehouse, proper insurance and a team of movers that can handle hauling the equipment that comes with a commercial move. Since there's money and time at stake, it's important for people to do the proper research beforehand. Otherwise, they may end up with damaged goods or a much longer move than expected — potentially halting their business for days.

In addition to finding a moving company that has experience with commercial moving, Hinnant recommends looking for movers that clearly communicate their plans and timeline and stay in contact with you throughout the moving day.

"Out of our 60 movers, 55 are seasoned and have been doing this for more than 10 years. They're very hand on and attentive, and they check in 48 hours before the move and provide estimated times on moving day," said Hinnant. "In order to get the quality of employees we have, we focus on giving them things like worker's compensation, health insurance for movers and families, no 1099 employees — and through that, we've built a great team."

There are a number of moving companies to choose from when it comes time to make a commercial move, but Hinnant recommends considering the quality of movers over the cost of the process.

"In this case, you may not want to go with the cheapest option," said Hinnant. "Because if you pay a little more, you'll get better service and more peace of mind that your equipment is being handled properly."
