Traffic on Interstate 40 between Wilmington and Wake County was slow Monday afternoon, as drivers returned home from the beach or traveled to celebrate the end of a busy holiday weekend.

Two wrecks near the Wake-Johnston county line briefly delayed drivers near the N.C. Highway 42 exit off I-40. One person was taken to WakeMed following a single-vehicle wreck. A second wreck involved three vehicles, but authorities said the people involved suffered only minor injuries.

Near Exit 309, where the three lanes of the highway merge into two, state troopers reported a bottleneck of a few miles, but overall traffic was moving slowly but surely.
