In April a portion of U.S. 401 will be closed as crews work on a construction project to extend the Triangle Expressway.

Starting at 9 p.m. on April 5 and running through April 8 at 5 a.m., the highway will be closed between Donny Brook Road and Ten Ten Road. The project was slated to begin in March but was delayed due to inclement weather.

Local access along U.S. 401 will be maintained south of Ten Ten Road throughout the scheduled closure.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan to avoid the area, if possible. If drivers must be in the area, they are advised to take the detour route by following signs along the roadway.

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction of the southern portion of the Complete 540 Project, which will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from N.C. 55 Bypass to Interstate 40.

WRAL News has a timeline of the final stages of the Complete 540 Project, which aims to improve traffic in Raleigh by 2028.

The NC DOT has created a project overview video and released it on YouTube.
